SK_A_4821_prod_pic__31536.1432123792.1280.1280Green Cheese is an original ‘filk’ or parody lyric, known in early music as ‘contrafactum.’ The tune is Greensleeves, a traditional English song dating to the early 16th Century.

My love and I prepared a spread,
One bright day in the countryside,
And as he cut the fine white bread,
I reached for the basket and looked inside:

Green cheese I did behold,
Green cheese, it looked quite old,
Green cheese, it smelled like mold,
Alas! All I have is green cheese.

At war, while helping to cook a meal,
A feast for all of my friends and kin,
Unto the cold box I did steal,
A-searching for the cheese within:

Green cheese I did behold,
Green cheese, it looked quite old,
Green cheese, it smelled like mold,
Alas! All I have is green cheese.
